The Antelope Valley Drainage Basin straddles the Los Angeles-Kern County Line and encompasses approximately 1,200 square miles of Los Angeles County. Numerous streams originating in the mountains and foothills surrounding the valley flow across the valley floor and eventually pond in the dry lakes adjacent to the County line. The valley lacks defined natural channels outside of the foothills and is subject to unpredictable sheet flow patterns.

The portion of the valley within Los Angeles contains the Cities of Lancaster and Palmdale. These cities contain urban development. Most of the outlying areas surrounding the cities are sparsely developed with scattered clusters of urban development.
